I, TONY

Tony Moussoulides (b. 1934) was a big-shot fashion photographer in Swinging Sixties London. At the peak of his career, Moussoulides shot for Glamour, Marie-Claire and Elle, and worked for brand names like Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel. Though he brushed shoulders with the rich and famous, he never quite reached those heights himself. Now partially blind, and back home in Cyprus, 85-year-old Moussoulides craves recognition, and dreams of creating a Hollywood-style movie based on his life. In this short documentary, which combines archival footage, interviews, and re-enactments, two female filmmakers set the stage for Moussoulides to play himself in four scenes inspired by the defining moments of his career, including a photo shoot with Andy Warhol and a meeting with John Huston. As Moussoulides’ artistic vision for the film clashes with that of its directors, what starts off as a light-hearted portrait of an artist becomes a study of the tensions that emerge when male authority is challenged.
